Dr Bruce Mackay

Dr Bruce Mackay has been a veterinarian for 30 years since graduating from the University of Queensland (BVSc) in 1979. Spending most of his time in small animal private practice, he has a wealth of experienced with small animal veterinary medicine. His clients and their pets inspired him to begin the long journey of study to sit his specialty exams. After training at University of Queensland, Murdoch University in Perth and Universities in California and North Carolina, he achieved his dream of becoming a Fellow of The Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in 2000. Dr Mackay co-founded Veterinary Specialist Services with the idea of providing excellence in veterinary medicine with a great team of specialist veterinarians all passionate about dogs and cats. Although very keen in all aspects of internal medicine, his special interests include gastro-enterology, endocrinology, cardiology and oncology. Bruce continues to be passionate about administering the best possible care to the animals he is privileged to treat. A wagging tail and a grateful lick still mean volumes to this veterinarian who has seen so many changes in his time as a veterinarian.    


 
 Dr Terry King

Emergency & Critical Care

   

Dr Terry King was born and raised in Townsville, North Queensland.  He graduated with his Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Queensland in 1975. Over his 19 years in private practice in Brisbane’s north western suburbs, Terry accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in small animal practice.  After a year's sojourn in the USA and Brisbane's Animal Emergency Centre, Terry joined the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital in late 1995 as a medical resident. He went on to become the Director of the Clinic and Hospital in 1997 and again in 2002. Terry joined the team at Veterinary Specialist Services as a Director in 2003. Terry’s real passion arises from the emergency side of veterinary practice, particularly the intricacy of understanding and treating the critically ill. He is highly committed to family veterinary medicine, emergency and critical treatment and prolonging the human-animal bond.    

 
 Dr Ann Thompson

Internal Medicine Specialist – Small Animal

   

Ann graduated from the University of Queensland in 1997. After graduation Ann worked in general practice in Melbourne and the UK before returning to the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital for an internship. Whilst at UQ she obtained her membership in small animal internal medicine. Ann then briefly worked at VSS before heading to the United States to pursue a residency in small animal internal medicine at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Indiana. In her 3 years at Purdue Ann developed an interest in endocrinology, gastroenterology and urinary tract diseases. During her residency Ann helped train veterinary and technician students, interns and residents. In the last year of her residency Ann was awarded the Katie Mcallister compassion award for compassionate care of her patients voted by veterinary students and veterinary faculty. Ann achieved her Masters in veterinary medicine in 2006 and passed her internal medicine exams at the end of her training program in 2006. She achieved her Diplomate in Small Animal Internal Medicine awarded by the American college of Veterinary medicine in March 2007. Ann returned to Australia in July 2006 to start working as part of the internal medicine team at VSS. Ann’s current areas of interest are urinary, endocrinology and non invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures. Ann is a registered specialist in Canine and Feline medicine.  

  
 
 Dr Danielle Bowles

Danielle grew up in Toowomba, and after graduating from University of Queensland in 2004 worked in
general practice for 4 months in Townsville, before starting a rotating internship at Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre mid 2005.  She then moved to Auckland, New Zealand to start a small animal medicine residency at the completion of internship, and while in NZ obtained her Membership in Small Animal Medicine in 2008.  After her residency in 2009, Danielle elected to stay on as a Medicine Registrar for one year before returning home to commence her employment at Veterinary Specialist Services as Medicine Registrar in 2010. Her goal is to sit her Fellowship exam in Small Animal Medicine 2011.

 

Veterinary interests: immune related diseases, endoscopy, cardiology and oncology,  and the psychology of veterinary medicine (human/animal bond, veterinary/client interactions, veterinarian psychological stress etc).
 

Dr Vicki Stenner

Vicki graduated from the University of Queensland in 1994 and worked in general practice in Melbourne and England before completing a three year residency in Small Animal Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 2001. During this time she completed her Fellowship training (Canine Medicine) under the supervision of Dr Steven Hollway as well as a Masters of Veterinary Studies. Following this Vicki has worked in referral centres in Melbourne and Brisbane, working for 8 years at the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and 12 months at Queensland Veterinary Specialists. Vicki's interests include neurology, endocrinology, medical emergencies and critical care of the medical patient.
 

Dr Wendy Agnew

Wendy grew up in the midwest USA. After first seeking the sunny weather of California and obtaining a degree in marine biology, she permanently relocated to Brisbane in 2000.  She graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Queensland in 2006. After graduating, Wendy undertook an internship with Veterinary Specialist Services in 2007, and commenced her residency in Small Animal Medicine in 2010, the same year she obtained her MACVSc qualifications.

Although she is interested in all aspects of internal medicine, her special areas of interest include gastroenterology, endocrinology, immune-mediated disease and critical care. Wendy is currently on maternity leave, but is looking forward to returning to her patients and clients in 2012.

 

Dr Rachel Korman
BVSc GPCertFelP MACVS MRCVS


After graduating from the University of Queensland in 2000, Rachel worked in small animal practice in both Australia and the United Kingdom and received a "Cynthia Award" by the Feline Advisory Bureau for her dedication to cats. Rachel completed three years as the Feline Advisory Bureau Senior Clinical Traning Scholar at the University of Bristol and plans to complete the European Diploma in Companion Animal Internal Medicine in 2012.

She is a member of the Feline Expert Panel, a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery and a contributing author to the British Small Animal Veterinary Association Manual of Feline Practice. Her research into acute phase proteins in feline infection won the best clinical research abstract presentation at the BSAVA Congress in 2011.

Rachel has lectured extensively in the United Kingdom and Europe and areas of interest include feline haematological disease, geriatric medicine and liver disease.  She has a partially sighted cat (Maus), a terror of a kitten (Moriarty) and a very unique, deaf dog called Wombat. She divides any spare time between the three of them!

Dr Philip Moses

Graduated from the University of Sydney in 1986 and worked in several large animal and mixed practices until cured of the desire to become a large animal practitioner. Moved to the UK in 1990 and began the long road to small animal surgical specialisation. Completed Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics at the Royal College in 1994 then worked in referral practice before returning to Australia in 1996. Commenced residency in small animal surgery in private practice in Brisbane completing MACVSc in 1998. Moved to the University of Sydney as a Senior Registrar, then Head of Surgery in 2000. Travelled to the United States to the University of Florida as a visiting scholar in 2001 before returning as a founding partner of Veterinary Specialist Services in Brisbane. Appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Queensland. Surgical interests include urinary tract, vascular, neurological and orthopaedic surgery. Currently involved in several research projects with Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney and the University of Queensland. Has presented at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas, published widely in Veterinary Journals as well as several Textbooks. Philip is a Chartered Member of the AVA and elected Member of AO. He is also the current President of the Australian and New Zealand College of  Veterinary Surgeons and an elected member of the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Queensland. Philip lectures widely in South East Asia to help promote and improve animal care.

Is the father of six beautiful children, an owner and breeder of Pugs and Dachshunds, and a devoted supporter of the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies.    

 
Dr Jason Mouatt

Dr Jason Mouatt became a Small Animal Surgery Specialist (FACVSc - Fellow of the Australian Collage of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery) in 2003. Dr Mouatt graduated from the University of Queensland (BVSc) in 1991, spending the next five years in general practice. His enthusiasm for surgery progressed to a residency in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Queensland. From there, Dr Mouatt spent 4 years as the Clinical Head of Small Animal Surgery at University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic and Hospital before joining the team at VSS in 2004. His surgical interests include neurosurgery, surgical oncology and joint surgery.    

 
Dr Gordon Corfield

Dr Gordon Corfield became a Fellow of the Australian Collage of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery in 2008. After graduating in 1996 from the University of Queensland (BVSc), Dr Corfield started his career in mixed animal practice in Victoria for a year before focusing on small animals in various practices within Brisbane, England and Sydney. In 2003, Dr Corfield began a three year Residency in Small Animal Surgery at Murdoch University (Perth). Once completed, he continued in Small Animal Referral Surgical practice in Perth (Rivergum Referral Services) until moving to VSS in March 2008. Dr Corfield’s particular surgical interests include orthopaedic (arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery) and spinal surgery.    

 
Dr Julian Lunn BVSc MACVSc (Brisbane)

Dr Julian Lunn is a graduate of the University of Sydney in 1996. He spent the first four years in mix practice in South-eastern NSW and Bath, UK. On returning to Australia, Julian took up a position at the University of Sydney’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital working in the primary accession and medicine referral services before commencing a residency in Small Animal Surgery in 2003. Julian completed the residency in 2007 and graduated with a Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies completing a thesis on Canine Neural Angiostrongyliasis. Julian has spent time at Murdoch University and Colorado State University as part of his training before joining VSS in January of 2008. He has a keen interest in soft tissue surgery and oncology. Julian is a Member of both the Small Animal Medicine and Small Animal Surgery chapters of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and is on track to obtain Fellowship in 2010.
