Dr Bruce Mackay has been a veterinarian for 30 years since graduating from the University of Queensland (BVSc) in 1979. Spending most of his time in small animal private practice, he has a wealth of experienced with small animal veterinary medicine. His clients and their pets inspired him to begin the long journey of study to sit his specialty exams. After training at University of Queensland, Murdoch University in Perth and Universities in California and North Carolina, he achieved his dream of becoming a Fellow of The Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in 2000. Dr Mackay co-founded Veterinary Specialist Services with the idea of providing excellence in veterinary medicine with a great team of specialist veterinarians all passionate about dogs and cats. Although very keen in all aspects of internal medicine, his special interests include gastro-enterology, endocrinology, cardiology and oncology. Bruce continues to be passionate about administering the best possible care to the animals he is privileged to treat. A wagging tail and a grateful lick still mean volumes to this veterinarian who has seen so many changes in his time as a veterinarian.

Dr Terry King

Dr Terry King was born and raised in Townsville, North Queensland. He graduated with his Bachelor of Veterinary Science from the University of Queensland in 1975. Over his 19 years in private practice in Brisbane’s north western suburbs, Terry accumulated a wealth of knowledge and experience in small animal practice. After a year's sojourn in the USA and Brisbane's Animal Emergency Centre, Terry joined the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital in late 1995 as a medical resident. He went on to become the Director of the Clinic and Hospital in 1997 and again in 2002. Terry joined the team at Veterinary Specialist Services as a Director in 2003. Terry’s real passion arises from the emergency side of veterinary practice, particularly the intricacy of understanding and treating the critically ill. He is highly committed to family veterinary medicine, emergency and critical treatment and prolonging the human-animal bond.

Dr Ann Thompson

Ann graduated from the University of Queensland in 1997. After graduation Ann worked in general practice in Melbourne and the UK before returning to the University of Queensland Veterinary Teaching Hospital for an internship. Whilst at UQ she obtained her membership in small animal internal medicine. Ann then briefly worked at VSS before heading to the United States to pursue a residency in small animal internal medicine at Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Indiana. In her 3 years at Purdue Ann developed an interest in endocrinology, gastroenterology and urinary tract diseases. During her residency Ann helped train veterinary and technician students, interns and residents. In the last year of her residency Ann was awarded the Katie Mcallister compassion award for compassionate care of her patients voted by veterinary students and veterinary faculty. Ann achieved her Masters in veterinary medicine in 2006 and passed her internal medicine exams at the end of her training program in 2006. She achieved her Diplomate in Small Animal Internal Medicine awarded by the American college of Veterinary medicine in March 2007. Ann returned to Australia in July 2006 to start working as part of the internal medicine team at VSS. Ann’s current areas of interest are urinary, endocrinology and non invasive diagnostic and interventional procedures. Ann is a registered specialist in Canine and Feline medicine.

Stuart grew up near Newcastle NSW. After graduating from Sydney University with a degree in Agricultural science he undertook veterinary science at Queensland University and graduated in 2000. Stuart started out in mixed practice in NSW but quickly saw the light and returned to Brisbane. He spent 18 months in small animal practice and gained an interest in small animal medicine and emergency medicine. After doing nights on-call, Stuart decided to do the night work full time and joined the Animal Emergency Centre in Brisbane 2002. He worked for Animal Emergency for 2 years before moving to Melbourne where he continued to work in both private general practice and emergency medicine. In 2007 Stuart achieved MACVSc in small animal medicine. After 4 long years of cold winters, he returned (again!) to sunny Queensland and spent almost a year with Animal Emergency Services before commencing a residency training program in small animal medicine in 2008 with VSS under the direct supervision of Dr Ann Thompson and Dr Bruce Mackay. Stuart has interests in gastroenterology, endocrinology and neurology as well as Emergency Medicine.

Dr Smith was born in South Australia and was educated in South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland. Dr Smith completed his veterinary degree in 1975 with Honours from the University of Queensland. After completing residencies at the University of Queensland and Colorado State University, Dr Smith went on to become a Fellow of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientist in 1995. Dr Smith combines his passion for Small Animal Surgery with his enthusiasm for rural Australia to provide surgical services both within Veterinary Specialist’s Brisbane Hospital and within various Northern Queensland and Northern Territory Veterinary Clinics. Within the surgical realms, his special interests include hip and stifle surgery, fracture repair and urinary tract surgery.

Graduated from the University of Sydney in 1986 and worked in several large animal and mixed practices until cured of the desire to become a large animal practitioner. Moved to the UK in 1990 and began the long road to small animal surgical specialisation. Completed Certificate in Small Animal Orthopaedics at the Royal College in 1994 then worked in referral practice before returning to Australia in 1996. Philip started residency in small animal surgery in private practice in Brisbane completing MACVSc in 1998. He moved to the University of Sydney as a Senior Registrar, then Head of Surgery is 2000. Philip travelled to the United States to the University of Florida as a visiting scholar in 2001 before returning as a founding partner of Veterinary Specialist Services in Brisbane. Philip was also appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor with the University of Queensland. His surgical interests include urinary tract, vascular, neurological and orthopaedic surgery. Currently involved in several research projects with Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney and the University of Queensland. He has presented at numerous conferences in Australia and overseas, published widely in Veterinary Journals as well as several textbooks. Philip is a father of six beautiful children and a devoted supporter of the Queensland Reds and the Wallabies.

Dr Jason Mouatt became a Small Animal Surgery Specialist (FACVSc - Fellow of the Australian Collage of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery) in 2003. Dr Mouatt graduated from the University of Queensland (BVSc) in 1991, spending the next five years in general practice. His enthusiasm for surgery progressed to a residency in Small Animal Surgery at the University of Queensland. From there, Dr Mouatt spent 4 years as the Clinical Head of Small Animal Surgery at University of Melbourne Veterinary Clinic and Hospital before joining the team at VSS in 2004. His surgical interests include neurosurgery, surgical oncology and joint surgery.

Dr Gordon Corfield became a Fellow of the Australian Collage of Veterinary Scientists in Small Animal Surgery in 2008. After graduating in 1996 from the University of Queensland (BVSc), Dr Corfield started his career in mixed animal practice in Victoria for a year before focusing on small animals in various practices within Brisbane, England and Sydney. In 2003, Dr Corfield began a three year Residency in Small Animal Surgery at Murdoch University (Perth). Once completed, he continued in Small Animal Referral Surgical practice in Perth (Rivergum Referral Services) until moving to VSS in March 2008. Dr Corfield’s particular surgical interests include orthopaedic (arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery) and spinal surgery.

Dr Julian Lunn BVSc MACVSc (Brisbane)

Dr Julian Lunn is a graduate of the University of Sydney in 1996. He spent the first four years in mix practice in South-eastern NSW and Bath, UK. On returning to Australia, Julian took up a position at the University of Sydney’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital working in the primary accession and medicine referral services before commencing a residency in Small Animal Surgery in 2003. Julian completed the residency in 2007 and graduated with a Master of Veterinary Clinical Studies completing a thesis on Canine Neural Angiostrongyliasis. Julian has spent time at Murdoch University and Colorado State University as part of his training before joining VSS in January of 2008. He has a keen interest in soft tissue surgery and oncology. Julian is a Member of both the Small Animal Medicine and Small Animal Surgery chapters of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists and is on track to obtain Fellowship in 2010.
