Cardiology Vet Nurse - Carrara Hospital

The Opportunity
Based at our Carrara hospital, Veterinary Specialist Services have a new opportunity available for a full-time qualified nurse who has a keen interest in cardiology. When not working with the cardiology team, this role will be required to support other nursing teams on a rotational basis. Our nurses perform specialised, high-quality care for critical patients (acute and chronic), and ensure each of our hospitals offers excellent service to our clients and optimum care to our patients. Our mission is to support our people to deliver the best outcomes for patients, their families, and referring practices.

Veterinary Specialist Services is an established Small Animal referral practice in South East Queensland. We have hospitals at Carrara, Jindalee, and Underwood.  The Role includes but is not limited to:

  • Perform and assist in cardiology procedures when required including but not limited to sedation protocols, BP’s, radiography, venipuncture, and restraint for echocardiography and ECGs
  • Set up and assist with cardiac-related procedures such as, but not limited to, thoracocentesis, pericardiocentesis, and abdominocentesis
  • Maintain the flow of the day with case prioritising in conjunction with cardiologists
  • Application and removal of 24-hour ECG monitor systems
  • Manage medication requests and phone messages as needed throughout the day
  • General nursing duties
  • Ensure patient pain management protocols are adhered to at all times.
  • Assist in preparing equipment and instruments for specific procedures
  • Ensure equipment and instruments are cleaned and maintained.

What we are looking for:

  • Formal qualifications - a Cert IV in Veterinary Nursing or BAppSc (Veterinary Technology) degree or equivalent
  • Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience in a busy general practice/emergency practice or referral hospital.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
    • General handling skills of canine and feline patients.
    • drug calculation and administration
    • venipuncture and IV Cath placement
  • A nurse who has a genuine interest in Cardiology. Many of the above cardiology-specific skills can be taught via hands-on learning with the senior cardiology nurses
  • Smartflow and EzyVet experience desirable but not essential
