Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) Underwood is our largest and most comprehensive specialist hospital, offering a full range of referral services and advanced diagnostics all under one roof. With 24/7 care and on-site access to Pet ICU and advanced imaging, Underwood is equipped to manage even the most complex veterinary cases.
Conveniently located in Brisbane’s south, VSS Underwood services referring veterinarians and pet owners from Brisbane, Logan, Redlands, Ipswich, and Northern NSW. There is ample on-site parking and easy access from the Gateway and Pacific Motorways.
Hospital Facilities
As the central hub of our specialist network, VSS Underwood is home to a wide range of facilities designed for high-level diagnostics, treatment, and patient support. These include:
- Consultation rooms for specialist appointments
- Advanced surgical theatres equipped for complex procedures
- Advanced anaesthesia capabilities
- On-site MRI
- On-site CT, fluoroscopy, and digital X-ray
- State-of-the-art ultrasound and endoscopy equipment
- On-site access to Pet ICU for intensive case support when required
- Access to ventilator support through Pet ICU for patients requiring intensive care
- Separate cat and dog wards
- On-site Animal Emergency Services (AES) for overnight and weekend care
24/7 Emergency and In-Hospital Care
Unlike many specialist centres, VSS Underwood offers true 24-hour in-hospital care from our own veterinary team. Hospitalised patients are monitored continuously by specialist trained nurses and on-call specialists, with emergency support provided by Animal Emergency Services (AES) after hours and on weekends.
Our partnership with Pet ICU, located in the same building, provides access to dedicated intensive care specialists when needed. This collaborative model ensures every patient receives the highest standard of care, day and night.

While cardiology services are no longer situated within our building, they are in the same facility, and we continue to collaborate closely with them for continuity of care.
Our team includes clinicians who are at the forefront of innovation, with experience in advanced procedures such as faecal microbiota transplants, ventilator therapy, laproscopic procedures and complex case management. Many of our nurses also hold university-level qualifications and are Recover CPR-certified, ensuring our patients receive the most skilled and compassionate care.
Supporting Referring Vets
We work in partnership with general practice veterinarians to ensure a smooth and transparent referral process. Our dedicated Vet Portal allows referring clinics to:
- Book specialist referrals directly
- Access real-time updates, pathology results and imaging
- Communicate with our team throughout the treatment process
We also offer a dedicated Referring Practice Hotline (0485 833 668), available for SMS and phone calls during business hours (for referring Vets only). This line connects GPs directly with our specialists to assist with triage, second opinions, and case discussions, helping you decide when and how to refer.

Education & Community Involvement
As the flagship hospital of VSS, Underwood regularly hosts CPD events, in-clinic training, and our popular Recover CPR Training courses for vets and nurses. Our team also contributes to the annual VSS Conference, including surgical workshops, specialist panels, and video content.
