LAPAROSCOPIC SURGERY AT VSS

In the below video,Dr Nick Cleland BVSc (Merit) FANZCVS Small Animal Surgery Specialist, talks about veterinary Laparoscopic Surgery in small animals at VSS's Brisbane (Underwood and Jindalee) and Gold Coast (Carrara) hospitals.

Our team of specialist veterinary surgeons offer many minimally invasive (keyhole surgery) surgical procedures, such as laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopy involves the placement of a small portal into the abdomen of the animal, which allows placement of instruments and a camera to perform various procedures within the abdomen. Laparoscopic procedures commonly performed at VSS include liver biopsy, laparoscopic ovariectomy and laparoscopic assisted percutaneous cystotomy to remove bladder or urethral uroliths (stones).

Veterinary Specialist Services also offers Laparoscopic Gastropexy for dogs at our Gold Coast (Carrara) and Brisbane (Underwood and Jindalee) hospitals.

What to Expect from Laparoscopic Organ Biopsies at VSS

In this video, Dr Nick Cleland, one of our experienced surgical specialists at Veterinary Specialist Services, explains how we perform organ biopsies using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery techniques. Laparoscopic biopsies are a minimally invasive surgical option available at VSS, offering pet owners a safer and more comfortable alternative to traditional open surgery.

When your pet requires further investigation of an internal condition, our team may recommend a biopsy of an abdominal organ. This is commonly done to investigate issues affecting the liver, pancreas, lymph nodes, gastrointestinal tract, and other abdominal organs. Laparoscopy allows us to collect larger, high-quality tissue samples, giving pathologists a clearer picture of the organ’s health compared to less invasive techniques like fine needle aspirates.

Why Choose Laparoscopic Surgery for Your Pet?

  • Minimally invasive approach: Smaller (keyhole) incisions mean less postoperative discomfort, a reduced risk of complications, and faster recovery times for your pet.

  • Day procedure: In many cases, laparoscopic biopsies are performed as a day surgery, meaning your pet can often go home the same day.

  • More accurate diagnosis: Biopsies obtained laparoscopically provide excellent tissue samples, allowing for advanced diagnostic testing, including specific liver tests like copper analysis.

  • Shorter hospital stays: Patients are usually admitted in the morning and can be discharged later that day or after a short overnight stay, depending on their recovery.

During the procedure, our veterinary surgeons use one or more small keyhole incisions (typically 2.5 to 3 cm) to insert a high-definition camera and specialised surgical instruments. This allows them to see inside your pet’s abdomen and collect tissue samples with precision and minimal disruption.

Post-surgery, pets are sent home with a small dressing over the surgical site, which is generally removed within a few days. Laparoscopic procedures at VSS come with a low complication rate, and our dedicated team is always available to guide you through aftercare, monitor healing, and ensure your pet’s comfort.
