Bee Stings and Insect Bites in Pets

Spring is Here - Be Aware of Bee and Insect Stings

As the weather warms up, our pets are spending more time outdoors, exploring the garden, chasing insects and sniffing around flowers. While this is a wonderful time of year, curious noses and playful paws can sometimes lead to an unexpected encounter with bees and other insects!

What happens if your pet is stung or bitten by an insect?

Bee and insect stings or bites can cause pain, redness, itching and localised swelling. Some pets may experience swelling around the face, muzzle or paws, while others can develop a severe allergic reaction that requires immediate veterinary attention.

Signs to Look Out For

  • Sudden swelling of the face, lips or muzzle.
  • Redness, pain or swelling around the affected area.
  • Excessive licking, scratching or pawing at the face.
  • Hives or raised bumps on the skin.
  • Vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Difficulty breathing, weakness or collapse.

When is it an Emergency?

If your pet develops difficulty breathing, facial swelling, repeated vomiting, weakness or collapse after a sting or bite, seek emergency veterinary care immediately. Severe reactions can progress quickly and may be life-threatening.

How Can You Keep Your Pet Safe?

  • Supervise outdoor play, particularly around flowering plants and beehives.
  • Be mindful of areas where insects are gathering or nesting.
  • Watch for sudden pawing at the mouth, facial rubbing or unexplained swelling.
  • If you suspect your pet has been stung or bitten, contact your veterinarian for advice.
  • Avoid giving human medications unless specifically instructed by your veterinary team.

A little awareness can make a big difference! While many stings and bites cause only mild, temporary discomfort, some can lead to serious reactions. Knowing the warning signs and acting quickly can help protect your pet.

If you are concerned that your pet has been stung or bitten by an insect, your veterinary team is here to help.

Enjoy the spring weather and keep those curious noses safe!
