How a Missing Cat Overcame Complex Facial Trauma

Tuppance's Incredible Journey Home

Meet Tuppance, a gorgeous 2.5-year-old ginger tabby with an extraordinary story of resilience.

Tuppance had been missing from home for several months when a local vet clinic made a call that changed everything: he'd been found on the roadside, badly injured. His microchip was up to date, and his family were reunited with him - though the road ahead was going to be a long one.

He was first seen by the emergency team at Veterinary Specialist Services Jindalee, who recognised the severity of his injuries, provided his initial stabilisation and care, coordinated closely to arrange his transfer, and kept his owner informed and supported every step of the way during those critical first hours.

That's where the real work began. Tuppance's injuries were extensive - a luxated and fractured temporomandibular joint (TMJ), jaw fractures and a severe degloving injury to his lip and facial tissue. A CT scan mapped the full picture, and the Advanced Animal Dentistry team took him to surgery to stabilise his jaw and repair the degloved tissue, alongside placing a feeding tube to support his nutrition while his mouth healed.

Given the severity of the tissue damage, some breakdown of the degloving repair was always a possibility - and Tuppance did need a revisional surgery to address this, which is a well-recognised part of managing wounds this severe.

Along the way, he was also diagnosed with mycoplasma, likely picked up during his months away, which was contributing to significant anaemia and added another layer of complexity to his management.

Throughout his recovery, the Advanced Animal Dentistry team worked closely with the Pet ICU (PICU) team, who cared for Tuppance over the course of a week following his surgery. He quickly became a favourite with the PICU team, taking everything in his stride and showing incredible tolerance throughout his care. In fact, the team even made him his own sign, letting everyone know to enter carefully as "Supervisor Tuppance" was on duty!

Tuppance was also supported by his primary care vets at Walter Street Vets in Boonah, whose ongoing support for Tuppance and his owner throughout this journey has been invaluable in keeping his recovery on track.

Weekly re-checks since then have shown steady, wonderful progress - his surgical site healing well, lip sitting in correct position, good jaw function returning and encouraging weight gain. According to his owner, Tuppance is back to being chatty, hungry and cheeky - fully himself again.

His recovery journey isn't over - he remains under ongoing assessment as he continues to heal - but every visit brings more great news. His owner is even fully enclosing the backyard so Tuppance can get back to his favourite hobby: sunbaking.

From missing, to roadside rescue, to complex facial trauma and multiple surgeries, Tuppance is a testament to feline resilience and to the team effort between Advanced Animal Dentistry, Veterinary Specialist Services Jindalee, PICU and Walter Street Vets Boonah.

Welcome home, Tuppance.
