Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) in French Bulldog
)
Coco, a French Bulldog, was recently referred to Veterinary Specialist Services Jindalee for assessment of a presumed cervical intervertebral disc (IVD) injury. Following a detailed examination and consultation with her family, Specialist Surgeon, Dr Abbie Tipler, initially recommended conservative medical management, as Coco was experiencing intermittent improvement at home.
Unfortunately, her symptoms progressed, and further investigation confirmed a cervical disc extrusion - a form of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), often referred to as a 'slipped disc'. Coco underwent a ventral slot procedure, a complex spinal surgery designed to relieve compression on the spinal cord.
IVDD is particularly common in brachycephalic breeds such as French Bulldogs, due to their unique anatomical structure. These breeds are predisposed to various spinal issues, which can lead to pain, reduced mobility and neurological deficits, without timely intervention.
Postoperatively, Coco showed a marked improvement and was discharged the following day on a comprehensive pain management plan. She is currently neurologically normal and continues to do well at home.
As a brachycephalic patient, Coco also received tailored care through our dedicated Brachycephalic Care Unit, which ensures that the unique health considerations of these breeds are expertly managed.
We look forward to seeing Coco again at her next recheck and are optimistic about her continued recovery.
