Laparoscopic Liver Biopsy in Munsterlander Dog
)
Hunter, a 10-year-old Munsterlander, has been on a complex medical journey with the team at Veterinary Specialist Services Jindalee. He initially presented to Emergency Veterinarian, Dr Kisa Baldwin with reduced appetite, fever, jaundice and elevated liver enzymes. Dr Baldwin referred Hunter internally to Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr Josh King for ongoing investigation and care.
Under Dr King’s expert guidance, Hunter underwent an array of diagnostic tests, including abdominal ultrasound, which uses sound waves to create real-time images of internal organs. This is a valuable, non-invasive tool for assessing liver health and structure.
Due to recurring signs of liver dysfunction (hepatopathy), Hunter was also seen by our surgery department, where Specialist Surgeon, Dr Cormac O’Brolchain performed laparoscopic liver biopsies.
This minimally invasive “keyhole” surgery, a particular area of interest for Dr Cormac, allows for precise tissue sampling using small incisions, resulting in reduced pain, faster recovery and less stress for patients like Hunter. During surgery, the liver appeared irregular and mottled, and multiple biopsy samples were collected for histopathology, copper levels and bacterial/fungal cultures.
Throughout the procedure, Hunter was monitored closely under general anaesthesia by our wonderful nursing team and received comprehensive intraoperative care to ensure his comfort and safety.
We’re proud to offer a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach at VSS, combining the expertise of our Emergency, Internal Medicine and Surgery teams to ensure pets like Hunter receive the highest standard of care every step of the way.
We look forward to supporting Hunter and his family on the rest of his journey.
