Types of Surgery

There are lots of names for problems affecting a dog’s knee (stifle). Two of the most common surgical problems are cruciate ligament disease and patella luxation.

Cruciate Ligament (TPLO) Surgery

Problems with the cranial cruciate ligament may be called:

  • Cruciate ligament injury or tear
  • ACL injury
  • Knee ligament tear

These injuries can occur in any size or breed of dog. Many active medium and large-breed dogs will benefit from TPLO (tibial plateau levelling osteotomy) surgery to stabilise the joint and help them return to comfortable function.

Patella Luxation (MPL) Surgery

Problems with the patella (kneecap) slipping in and out of place are usually called medial patella luxation (MPL), but you may also hear patella luxation or luxating patella.

Patella luxation is more common in smaller breeds but can affect dogs of any size. Surgery is often recommended to reduce pain, improve stability and limit further joint damage.

If your family vet has mentioned any of these terms or you are concerned about your dog’s hind-leg lameness, please contact us to arrange a consultation with one of our surgeons.

TPLO/Cruciate Ligament Surgery

TPLO/Cruciate Ligament Surgery

What are the signs my dog might require TPLO surgery?

Your family vet may suspect a partial or complete cruciate ligament rupture in your dog based on the following signs or symptoms:

  • Persistent hind-limb (back leg) lameness (limping)
  • Pain on knee (stifle) manipulation
  • Positive cranial drawer test (shows instability by manually pulling the tibia forward relative to the femur when the joint is manipulated)
  • Tibial thrust test (the tibia moves forward when weight is applied)
  • Active, medium or large dogs, where stability and faster return to function are priorities.
